Tanjong Pagar hotels
Tanjong Pagar is a historic district that forms part of the central business district of Singapore. The area has traditionally been the home to immigrants that started coming in from China and India in the mid 19th century. The area began to thrive when shophouses (tenements), stores and restaurants popped up to accommodate the dockworkers. The area then became overcrowded and was one of the hubs of prostitution and opium trafficking in the region. Now the area has been renovated and has some of the most interesting and culturally diverse neighbourhoods in the city-state.
- See a variety of stage performances that represent the diverse ethnic cultures of Singapore at the Telok Ayer Performing Arts Centre, one of the cultural hubs of Tanjong Pagar.
- Eat hum chimpeng, ngorhiang and other Cantonese specialties at the Maxwell Food Centre that is also one of the best places in Singapore to buy fresh fruits and vegetables from local vendors.
- See the collection of beautifully restored shophouses that the area is known for at Tanjong Pagar Plaza, where you can also find plenty of street vendors selling fish soup and other local treats.
Singapore has some of the best public transportation in all of Southeast Asia, so it is easy to get to Tanjong Pagar, which is centrally located in the city. The easiest way to get there is to take the Singapore MRT to the Tanjong Pagar Station that is within walking distance of almost all of the major attractions in the district. There is also train service from Tanjong Pagar to other cities around, as well as to Kuala Lumpur in nearby Malaysia. The best way to explore the winding streets and tiny shops in the district is on foot.
