Singapore Supreme Court
It would be difficult to visit Singapore without noticing the copper dome of the old Supreme Court building that defines the city’s skyline. Designed in the 1930s’ by the architect Frank Dorrington Ward, the Classical, Western architecture of Singapore’s old Supreme Court building reflects the tastes and styles bestowed upon Singapore by the country’s former British occupiers. The stately Ionic and Corinthian columns lining the building, along with its tympanum sculpture, are the work of Milanese sculptor Cavalieri Rudolfo Nolli. Located near St. Andrews Road in the heart of Singapore, the building’s ornate statues and picturesque façade make the Singapore Supreme court a timeless tourist attraction.
- To see where many of Singapore’s most important historical moments have taken place, take a tour of the iconic City Hall building, right next door to the old Supreme Court.
- Walk down St. Andrew’s road and experience the majesty of the imposing spires of St. Andrew’s Cathedral. St. Andrew’s is not only Singapore‘s largest cathedral, but also another example of the city’s Western architecture.
- Explore the exterior of the old Supreme Court building and marvel at the detailed façade, including the ornate sculptures of Justice and Law mounted just below the dome.
Because the old Supreme Court building is located in the heart of Singapore’s central business district, it is easily accessible via public transportation. The Supreme Court is just a short walk from the City Hall MRT Station and can be reached easily by bus (in fact, there is a bus stop right in front of the building). Because there are several historical attractions nearby, visitors may enjoy taking a stroll in the surrounding area to learn more about Singapore’s history. Visitors are also encouraged to explore the area by foot to view the detailed architecture of the classical buildings up close.
