Sri Mariamman Temple hotels
Sri Mariamman Temple
The Sri Mariamman Temple is located in the Chinatown district of Singapore, where it is a historic monument, tourist attraction, and oldest Hindu temple in the city. It is a traditional agamic temple that was built in the ancient Dravidian architectural style. From its beginning in 1827, the Sri Mariamman Temple has provided a spiritual refuge for South Indian Tamil Hindus in Singapore. The temple was founded by Naraina Pillai as a tribute to the goddess Mariamman, who is said to protect against disease. The temple is known for its intricately adorned façade and tower depicting dozens of Hindu gods.
- Admire the exterior of the Sri Mariamman Temple to see the colourful gopuram with its detailed renderings of Hindu deities that are said to protect the Hindus in Singapore that pass through the entrance.
- Visit Singapore a week before Deepavali to see the annual fire-walking ceremony held in the Sri Mariamman Temple, a unique display of endurance and faith.
- Enter the main prayer hall where you will find rich frescoes on the ceiling, richly ornamented columns, and a large mandala diagram.
Singapore has some of the best public transportation in southeast Asia, so getting to the Sri Mariamman Temple is easy from just about anywhere in the city. The easiest way to get there is to take the MRT, as there are several stops within easy walking distance of the temple. The closest is the Chinatown MRT station but you could also get off at the Clarke Quay station or the Tanjong Pagar station. There is a lot to see and do in the Chinatown district, and the best way to explore the small alleyways and streets is on foot.
