Rochor is a neighbourhood in central Singapore that is situated just east of the massive grounds of Istana, the presidential residence. The neighbourhood is a mixed bag of commercial and residential areas with plenty of restaurants and shopping centres sharing space with condos and high-rise apartment buildings. The area is named after the Rochor Canal that snakes its way through the neighbourhood, which is also home to Singapore’s Arab Quarter and the Little India. In these enclaves, visitors are treated to fragrant aromas spilling from ethnic dining spots and tiny shops selling authentic wares from abroad.
- Stroll through the streets of Little India and Arab Quarter, with stops at the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple and Malay Heritage Centre to learn about Singpore’s diverse cultural make-up and take a break for shopping at the Mustafa Centre.
- Get in some serious electronics shopping at Sim Lim Square, a huge shopping mall with several floors of shops selling electronics, cameras, smartphones, and more at a discount.
- Catch a performance of Shakespeare in the Park at Fort Canning Park on the edge of Rochor to see top theatre actors from around Singapore perform popular plays like Macbeth.
Singapore’s modern, clean, and efficient metro system known as the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) makes it easy to get around without a car. The Bugis station on the East West Line of the MRT is a convenient stop for visitors to Rochor. The East West Line also goes directly to Changi Airport, making Rocher easy to get to and from for air travellers. Little India also has an MRT stop on the North East Line, which also connects to Clarke Quay and Chinatown. From Rochor, it is an easy walk to Istana and the National Museum of Singapore.
