Outram is a district of Singapore that is situated in the Central Area, just outside of the city centre and financial district. Outram has had a long and tumultuous history and is largely known for the aftermath of the Singapore Mutiny in 1915, when 47 sepoy soldiers were executed near the Outram Prison. Now, this modern district is home to many important municipal buildings, and also serves as one of the biggest hubs of transportation in central Singapore. There are several interesting temples and ethnic neighbourhoods here that are a great way to experience the diverse culture of Singapore.
- Explore Singapore’s rich Chinese heritage in the Chinatown neighbourhood of Outram, where you will find authentic Chinese food and plenty of unique specialty shops.
- Visit the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum to see interesting antiquities that are said to have been left behind after the cremation of Buddha.
- Go to the Nagore Durgha shrine and see its famous 14-storey minarets topped by onion domes; this is one of the most prominent man-made landmarks in Singapore, and has been a national monument since the 1970’s.
Singapore features some of the best public transportation in southeast Asia, so you will have no problem getting to the Outram district from just about anywhere in the city. The easiest way to get there is to take the Singapore MRT and get off at the Outram Park station that is centrally located in the district. You can also get off at the Chinatown stop, depending on which part of the district you plan to visit. The SBS Transit bus line also has several routes that go from various locations around the city to this district.
