Little India hotels
Although many cities in the world boast an area known as Little India, the one found in Singapore is much more than a collection of Indian restaurants and Bollywood video shops, as Indians represent one of the largest ethnic groups in Singapore. The local Tamil ethnic group refers to Little India as Tekka and it was once thought to be a prison colony for Tamil criminals. Little India is found on the east side of the Singapore River and is now more known for its food, traditional Indian celebrations, as well as its many temples.
- Get a look at Indian Hindu culture in Singapore by paying a visit to the Veermakaliamman Temple, which is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali and one of the most popular sites in Little India.
- Check out Arabian and Renaissance-style architecture while in Singapore at the Abdul Gafoor Mosque, which stands as testament to the diverse religious culture of Little India.
- Shop for unique Tamil spices and foods on Serangood Road, which is one of the main shopping centres in Little India and a great place to see the diverse culture of the area.
Getting around Singapore is very easy being that the country has really efficient and fast public transportation in the cities. Little India is best reached by the MRT by getting off at the Little India stop or the Farrer Park stop. Both are very close to the area and most people just get out and walk, take taxis, or explore on a bicycle. During important holidays and on market days, many of the streets are closed to traffic, which makes it great for pedestrians on the hunt for the best curry.
