Best known historically as a residential district, the Katong area of Singapore has grown considerably in recent times due to governmental redistricting. Along with its many housing facilities, the neighbourhood also includes many shopping venues and restaurants, as well as the entertainment venues along East Coast Road. Due to the district’s culturally diverse population, which includes Eurasian and Peranakan individuals, the area has developed a cuisine of its own. Visitors may want to get a taste of the spicy noodle soup, called Katong Laksa, which took its name from the neighbourhood.
- Head out for a day of shopping at the expansive 112 Katong shopping mall, which is located at the corner of Joo Chiat Road and East Coast Road in Singapore.
- Walk through Katong to taste the food of several local restaurants, including Kim Choo’s Kitchen, Famous 49 Katong Laksa, and the Chin Mee Chin Confectionery.
- Purchase a walking guide and spend an afternoon exploring this Singapore neighbourhood on foot to see some of the unique architecture of area housing and religious buildings.
Most visitors, even those who are coming from nearby destinations, will find it easiest to fly into Singapore and arrive at Changi Airport. Upon landing, guests can take several public transportation options to the city centre, including taxicabs and shuttles. The city also operates a metropolitan transit subway system that travels from the airport to the downtown section. To get to Katong, tourists can take several city buses, including numbers 10, 12, and 40 to East Coast Road. The MRT subway also travels to Katong on the Paya Lebar route, which includes a free bus transfer.
