Although duplicates can be found around the world, the Chinatown in Singapore attracts visitors with its unique history, impressive size, and a myriad of tasty and colourful attractions. Evidence of this city was first recorded in the 14th century, making this Chinatown not only the world’s largest, but the oldest. Lovely elements of Baroque and Victorian architecture contrast with modern elements to create a visual potpourri.
- Stroll down Pagoda Street to the south bridge road end and marvel at the beautiful Sri Mariamman Hindu Temple that gave the street its name.
- Wait until after dark to explore the famous Singapore Chinatown Night Market on Trengganu Street, which features a wide variety of shops, entertainment and some of the world’s most delicious street food. During Chinese New Year this market is extremely popular with hungry revellers.
- Look up to take in the view of the three-storey shop houses found along Chinatown’s Teo Hong Road, a great example of historic buildings in Singapore.
Chinatown integrates seamlessly into Singapore’s very efficient public transportation system and can be reached easily in a number of ways. The MRT passes through Chinatown, so visitors who get off the train at Pagoda Street Station will be thrust into the heart of the neighbourhood. There are also several city buses that stop in the area. Since many of this neighbourhood’s streets are closed to traffic, once you arrive you will be able to enjoy the unique sights, smells and tastes on foot without having to watch out for rickshaws or cars.
