Arab Quarter hotels
Singapore’s Arab Quarter, also known as Kampong Glam, is a small but atmospherically rich neighbourhood in the city’s Rochor area. The area originally was home to Singapore royalty during the 1800s. The mosque, Masjid Sultan, was built in 1928 and is a centrepiece of the neighbourhood. Its shops and restaurants have a distinctive Arab flair. Travellers will find a nice change of pace from the bustle of Singapore in the Arab Quarter, which has retained its authenticity. As has been there done for decades, Muslim residents go about their daily business, attending prayers, and shopping.
- Shop for antiques on Bussorah Street in the Arab Quarter, where you will find treasures and trinkets unlike the mostly modern merchandise sold elsewhere in Singapore.
- Sip a cup of rich Turkish coffee or a local teh tarik “frothy tea milk,” and people-watch from your perch at a one of the Arab Quarter’s charming sidewalk cafes.
- Visit Singapore’s largest mosque, Masjid Sultan, with its minaret, golden dome, Arab décor, and listen for the muezzin’s call to prayer.
The Arab Quarter is located near the Queen Street Bus Terminal in central Singapore. Singapore’s convenient MRT train system has a stop, called Bugis Station, that is a few blocks away. Keep an eye out for the Golden Landmark Hotel, a very tall landmark that sits next to the Arab Quarter. Taxicabs are also a good mode of transport around Singapore. The Arab Quarter is small enough that you can walk through it in an afternoon, but you might want to allow more time if you are in a serious shopping mood or would like to linger at a cafe.
