Novosibirsk General Information

The political and commercial heart of Novosibirsk Oblast and the Siberian Federal District of Russia proves that there is life in the colossal and infamous continent-like segment of North Asia. Siberia is a formidable enterprise to scale, even for the most intrepid tourist. Nonetheless, at the end of the day, Russia east of the Ural Mountains is well worth the effort, energy and expense. While vast tracts of Siberia do confirm long-held stereotypes, expecially for passengers on the Trans-Siberian Railway, the fact of the matter is that Russia’s hinterland is much more than a barren, horizon-less landscape.

With 1.4 million people, Novosibirsk is the dominant urban hub in Siberia and behind only Moscow and Saint Petersburg in Russia. The city was a product of epic railway construction and in particular, rose to prominence after the completion of the Turkestan–Siberian Railway in 1906. After the Russian Civil War and throughout the rule of the Soviet Union, Novosibirsk became the industrial power base of Siberia. In a feat without precedent on the world stage, the city’s population broke the 1 million mark in 1962, a mere seven decades after Novosibirsk’s formal establishment. Modern-day visitors to the city can enjoy attractions like the Novosibirsk State Art Museum, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and State Academy Opera and Ballet. A side trip from Novosibirsk to the UNESCO World Heritage Golden Mountains of Altai is a must.
