Ekaterinburg General Information

The most important city in central Russia is without question, Ekaterinburg. Known as Sverdlovsk in the Soviet era, the metropolis of 1.3 million people is the fifth-most populous in the country. Named after Saint Catherine in 1723, the city has been the site of record for many dramatic and transformative events throughout Russia’s turbulent history. It was in Ekaterinburg, after all, where Czar Nicholas II, his wife Alexandra and their five children were infamously executed by Bolshevik forces in 1918.

As a major historic and cultural hub, Ekaterinburg has a considerable abundance of cultural attractions. The city is famous the world over as a nexus of theatre, dance and classical music. Indeed, from the Ekaterinburg Academic Ballet and Opera Company to the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra, some of the best performers in Russia work here. A significant haunt for writers, composers, actors and artists, Ekaterinburg also has some thirty museums that cover a diverse range of topics. Some of the best include the Nevyansk Icon Museum, Ekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts, Ekaterinburg Museum of Geology and Museum of Ural Jewelry. The dramatic Church on Blood in Honour of All Saints Resplendent in the Russian Land was built at the turn of the 21st century to commemorate the canonization of the Romanovs.
