Intramuros is the oldest historic establishment in Metro (Downtown) Manila, nicknamed the “Walled City” because it served as the seat of government during the Spanish colonial rule of the Philippines, where many literal walls and fortifications still stand. Today it is an exciting place to visit because it has more evidence of Spanish influence than anywhere else in Manila. Citadels and other fortified establishments remain, including Fort Santiago and other churches along the Pasig River, which are all maintained parks by now and very fascinating to tour. The museums and city centres are the main reason to visit Intramuros, but tourists will also enjoy the large amount of restaurants and hotels here.
- Take a grand tour of the Rizal Shrine, located within Fort Santiago, containing works and other exhibits related to José Rizal, the Philippines’ most famous patriot.
- Ride a calesa (a horse-drawn carriage) around Intramuros like a citizen of old; a single ride will only cost you 350 pesos.
- Discover the many-tiered history of Intramuros during a tour of Ayuntamiento, a building that has survived an earthquake and a world war siege.
Manila’s taxi services are relatively cheap compared to other cities, and despite traffic jams, the fare goes up through distance and not time—so it might take a while to get there from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, but you won’t be spending as much money as you would otherwise. The LRT is a good way to get close to Intramuros, the closest station being Central Terminal, and takes far less time to travel. A taxi might be the only option from this terminal, but walking through Manila could be a nice adventure. Intramuros is almost completely walled-in, located in central Manila, making it easy to spot and well-connected to the other districts.
