Coconut Palace hotels
The Coconut Palace, located in Manila, is the home and primary workplace of the vice president of the Philippines. The unique palace was commissioned by former first lady Imelda Marcos for a visit by Pope John Paul II in the early 1980s. The palace was designed by Francisco Mañosa, an architect who hoped to show off the versatility of the coconut plant. The design is not only shaped like a coconut, but also features many coconuts in the interior. The Coconut Palace is a celebration of the “Tree of Life” and one of the cultural centres of the Philippines.
- Explore the dining room of the Coconut Palace in Manila, where you will find a 101 coconut-shell chandelier, and a long dining table made of 40,000 small pieces of inlaid coconut shells, one of the strangest designs in Manila.
- Take a tour of the palace to see the unique guest rooms, some of which have greeted famous people like Brooke Shields and George Hamilton on their trips to Manila.
- Visit the Folk Arts Theatre right next to the Coconut Palace and catch a performance of traditional Filipino dance or drama.
Manila is a sprawling city that can sometimes be difficult to navigate, but getting to the Coconut Palace should be easy using a combination of public transportation. Those taking the LRT-1 should get off at the Vito Cruz station and then climb aboard one of the orange jeepneys that are waiting outside of the station. Taxis in Manila are cheap and plentiful but be sure to negotiate the fare before leaving, as many of the drivers refuse to use the metre. The Coconut Palace is located inside of the CCP Complex, which can be explored on foot.
