The district of Uranienborg in Oslo is located just outside the city centre, close to major attractions such as the Royal Palace and its sprawling gardens. Largely a quiet residential district and part of the borough of Frogner, Uranienborg also boasts a fantastic park and many monuments and statues. It is known for its stunning church with a distinctive spire that can be spied across the city. The area was once rural and became part of Christiania city in 1859. Today, it is a pleasant base from which to explore the surrounding area.
- Take a stroll through Uranienborg Park, making sure to peek at the bronze statue and the Uranienborg Church designed by architect Arnstein Arneberg and featuring gorgeous stained glass windows by Emanuel Vigeland.
- Walk over to one of Oslo’s top tourist attractions, the Vigeland Sculpture Park, to see over 200 sculptures in bronze, cast iron, and granite created by sculptor Gustav Vigeland, who also designed the large park.
- Go ice skating at nearby Frogner Stadion during the winter season, or cool off at the water slides and pool of Frognerbadet along with Oslo locals in the summer.
There are a few tram stops in Uranienborg, namely Riddervolds plass, Briskeby, and Uranienborgveien, which are all served by line #19. The Royal Palace, Vigeland Sculpture Park, Frogner Park attractions are all within walking distance of Uranienborg. Oslo is quite an expensive city, but there is an all-day pass that covers all modes of public transport, including buses, metro trains, and trams. The T-bane subway is clean and safe, whilst the blue bus services are frequent and punctual. Taxis are relatively straightforward to flag down, and most drivers speak excellent English. Much of the city is easily accessible on foot.
