Torshov is a green gem less than three kilometres north from the centre of Oslo, Norway. The neighbourhood in the borough of Sagene is named for a medieval farm that once stood in the area, Torshaug, meaning Thor’s Hill, which is thought to have been built on the site of a temple dedicated to the thunder god. Well-planned residential areas and spacious green parks make Torshov a relaxing place to visit or stay whilst in Oslo. Stores and restaurants are found along the main thoroughfare Vogts gate, and the pristine Nordmarka wilderness area is less than a 10-minute drive.
- Attend an event at the gorgeous neoclassical Soria Moria Kulturslott, a historic building from 1928 which houses the Cosmopolite Scene concert venue and the Torshov Theatre, a stage for the National Theatre.
- Enjoy views of Oslo from Torshovdalen or the gentle slopes of Torshovparken, which is also the place to go for summertime concerts and New Year’s Eve fireworks.
- Check out the beautiful bronze statue of an ox, which is surrounded by sculptures of four small frogs by Asbjørg Borgfelt, a Norwegian sculptor born in Oslo, at Oksefontenen, or the Ox Fountain.
Visitors landing at Oslo Airport (Gardermoen) can simply take a train from the airport to reach the city's central railway station. Torshov is located about 2.5 kilometres from the city's central area, and tram number 11, 12, or 13 will take travellers to Torshov. Whilst in Torshov, most attractions can be navigated by foot or by bicycle. To save money on a trip to Norway, pass cards that offer free admissions to certain museums as well as various types of discounts and free use of public transportation systems are available. These cards offer options for 24-, 48-, and 72-hour usage.
