Without a doubt, Gamlebyen is one of the most popular destinations for tourists visiting Oslo. This old town is not only a standing, but ancient, fortress, it is also alive, charming, and well worth a visit. Home to structures going back a thousand years, cobbled paved streets and interesting locations such as Fredrikstad City Museum, Gamlebyen is a holiday seeker’s haven. Roaming the century-old streets in the town will take you back to the old days, and the quaint antique shops only add to the picturesque beauty of this old Scandinavian town.
- Stroll through the Medieval Park in the heart of Gamlebyen, where the Øya Festival is held each year, and which is also home to ancient sites such as St. Olav’s Monastery.
- Visit the Old City Cemetery (Gamlebyen Gravlund), and enjoy the quietness of this aged Oslo burying ground where thick trees and foliage muffle the sound of cars and noise whilst offering a unique location to meditate.
- Take the boat tour around the islands and islets of the Oslo fjord.
Getting around this Nordic old town is easy and pretty straightforward. A bus service, TimEkspressen, can get you to Gamlebyen from Oslo. But once in this ancient town, moving from place to place is best done by walking in order to soak in the sights and beauty. However, there are buses that can take you from place to place, and are also affordable. There is also a ferry downtown that goes to Gamlebyen, and to the nearby suburb of Gressvik. Taxis are also available from the main street at friendly rates.
