Bygdøy is a green peninsula in west Oslo. Like most of Norway, this area is largely known for its ancient culture, the Vikings, and the seafaring culture they perfected. This place has some of the best Oslo museums, which will not only enlighten you about Norway's rich maritime history but also gives you a chance to enjoy a horse and buggy ride with your family through its lush countryside. Nothing beats checking out how royalty lives: the Royal Manor has had an association with the royal family since the fourteenth century. It is located right beside the King's summer home.
- Visit the Kon-Tiki Museum, the Viking Ship Museum, and the Norwegian Maritime Museum to learn about the amazing journeys of famous seafarers from the Oslo area and see real longboats, some of which are thousands of years old.
- Relax (in the summer) at Huk Beach, which is part regular beach jutting into the Oslofjord and part nudist colony.
- Take the children whilst in Oslo to check out the vast organic farm at Royal Manor in Bygdøy and observe the farm’s dairy cows, sheep, and ponies.
To get to Bygdøy, southwest of Downtown Oslo, you can take a bus or ferry, but taking a ferry might be best. Take Ferry number 91 for a chance to see KS Norge, the King of Norway’s ship, along the way and breathe the fresh sea air. Another option is to take the Hop-On Hop-Off tour. For a chance to enjoy free entry into various museums, free public transport, and other kinds of discounts, get the Oslo Pass. You can opt for a 24-hour, 48-hour, or 72-hour card depending on how long you are visiting.
