Drammen General Information
Drammen is a lively de facto satellite suburb of Oslo, the inimitable capital of Norway. Though technically a city by definition, Drammen’s development has largely unfolded in lockstep with the country’s premier metropolis 43 km to the north.
Home to just over 62,000 people, the municipality’s historic modus operandi was for the most part, industry. As a vital seaport, commercial and business hub, Drammen is still a frequent stop for business travelers. However, any lingering vestiges of what was once a seemingly wan manufacturing town have long since vanished. The new, spruced-up Drammen is not entirely devoid of heavy machinery of course - the municipality is still a significant contributor to the Norwegian economy - but happily, no longer stands out as a place where leisure tourism flounders. The backdrop of bucolic Buskerud county helps seal Drammen’s charm and attractions like the venerable Aass Brewery and Original Home of Potato Alcohol Aquavit tie the town to industries more approachable and quenchable than pulp and paper. A Stromsgodset IF home game at Marienlyst Stadion is a must for visitors who make it for football season and the Drammen Sacred Music Festival shows off the town’s erudite, tender side.
