Westport experiences a cool, wet climate. The area receives nearly 90 inches of precipitation per year, so bring your rain gear. The average maximum summer temperature is 20°C, while winter’s average high temperature is 13°C. The best time to visit is May through August because of the warmer temperatures.
Getting There & Around
You can fly into the regional airport from Wellington in less than an hour on one of the two daily flights. There are also flights from other airports in New Zealand. The two closest international airports are in Christchurch and Wellington, both less than 300 km away. You can drive in from the south on the Coast Road to Westport, often described as one of the most scenic road trips in the world. There is bus service from Greymouth, Picton and Nelson. To see the many sights and attractions in the area, it is best to have a car.
