Te Papa Museum
There is no better place to explore an immersive and entertaining collection of New Zealand’s national treasures, history, and culture than at this all-encompassing museum. Discover everything from tribal sculptures to modern paintings and traditional items for hunting and gathering. Go beyond the farthest limits of your imagination by discovering new and fascinating species of animal and plant life that have evolved around the New Zealand region. Te Papa Museum is surely one of those urban gems that sets Wellington aside as one of the coolest capitals in the world.
- Mountains to Sea: Plunge into a wild safari through the deepest waters and across the highest peaks of New Zealand to encounter over 2500 native animals and plants, including whales, kea and kaka.
- Mana Whenua explores New Zealand’s Maori heritage through accounts of ancestral voyages, waiata songs and narratives and replicas of traditional dwellings, all at the Te Papa museum in Wellington.
- Discover an unfamiliar and tantalizing world while in Wellington, through the history of New Zealand’s art in a collection that moves from traditional tribal art through classic movements and into a cornucopia of modern creations.
Te Papa Museum is a popular attraction among tourists as well as locals, which places it right in the middle of the Wellington action and readily accessible by public transportation. From its central location downtown, the museum looks out over the Lambton Harbour, across from Waitangi Park. You can take bus route 24 and get off at Te Papa Museum stop, directly across from the complex. There are a few other bus stations scattered in the blocks between Oriental Parade and Taranaki Street, so it is an easy walk to the museum past downtown cafes, galleries and shops.
