Kilbirnie is a suburb of Wellington, New Zealand, that is situated about three kilometres from the city centre. Kilbirnie, which is named for a town in Scotland, has enjoyed a recent renaissance. Its proximity to the city centre of Wellington, as well as the airport, has made it a popular residential and important commercial area. Once an area inhabited by Aboriginals, Kilbirnie was settled by Europeans in the 19th century. Now it is largely a quiet, residential suburb with plenty of shopping and restaurants that make the perfect getaway from the city.
- Get transported from Wellington to the depths of outer space on a visit to the Carter Observatory in Kilbirnie, where you can look through a 144-year-old telescope or see an exciting show in the planetarium.
- Take a trip to see Glengarnock Castle near Kilbirnie in Wellington, one of the fortifications of Ayrshire built in the 15th century.
- Fish, water ski, or play rugby at the Kilbirnie Loch, or just walk around the area and enjoy beautiful environment.
You can get to Kilbirnie from Wellington or the Wellington International Airport very easily using public transportation or private car. From the airport you will find direct bus transfers to Kilbirnie and the surrounding suburbs. You can also catch buses from the main bus terminal in Wellington, and there are several routes that pass through Kilbirnie. Once there, the suburb is small enough to navigate on bicycle, although the best way to see the area is to hire a car in Wellington. This will allow further exploration of the beautiful nature and coastline surrounding Kilbirnie.
