Cable Car hotels
The Cable Car offers a taste of history as it moves along 628 metres of track while the enthusiastic traveller is lifted 119 metres above the beautiful city of Wellington. The Cable Car, which began operation in 1902, is a funicular railway, meaning that the cars are permanently attached to the cable. Today, it runs every 10 minutes from the central downtown area. It leaves Lambton Quay and travels to the village-like suburb of Kelburn, climbing steeply to a lookout point for the best views of the city. Catching a breath-taking sunset is a nice way to end the day.
- Jump on to the Cable Car, listen to the informative guided tour, and enjoy delightful refreshments as you travel through tunnels and past Victoria University, and Carter Observatory.
- Buy a one-way ticket to the spectacular lookout point, and then walk back to the Wellington centre by way of the breath taking Botanical Gardens.
- Walk through the award-winning Cable Car Museum beside the lookout point as the historic story of Wellington’s most popular attraction is brought to life.
After landing at the Wellington International Airport, hire a car or take a bus for a scenic 20-minute drive to Wellington by way of Calabar Road. Follow the signs directing you to Lambton Quay in the city centre, from where the Cable Car leaves. You can also ferry across the beautiful Cook Strait into Wellington Harbor and drive 24 kilometres to Lambton Quay via State Highway 2 and the Wellington Urban Motorway. New Zealand is a perfect country to explore by car or touring bus. The scenery is magnificent and worth the travel time.
