Timaru has a dry, temperate climate with average temperatures around 73°F (23°C), making visiting possible just about any time of the year. Summers are moderate with ocean breezes, and winters can be a bit frosty. Winds in the area can reach storm-force levels during the warmer months of January and February.
Getting There & Around
By air, travellers can come in through either Christchurch International Airport and take a long-distance bus or train, or fly into Richard Pearse Airport. The Richard Pearse is located north of town and is a small airport with flights from Wellington. Almost all road connections will use State Highway 1, the main route down South Island's east coast.
Getting around outside the area will be done by regular coach and minibus services that travel to Christchurch, Dunedin, Queenstown and other cities. In Timaru, walking and rental cars can be used to see the town and get to attractions.
