Te Puia hotels
Te Puia, formally known as the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, was established by an Act of Parliament in 1963. Situated in the Te Whakarewarewa Valley, the institute promotes the preservation of the Maori art, culture and history. It also conducts training for hundreds of aspiring Maori artists in various art fields such as carving and weaving. Te Puia's relentless devotion to enriching the Maori heritage made it into one of Rotorua's most sought attractions, where visitors can participate in a whole range of activities, and tours to learn more about the natural surroundings and the Maori people.
- Take a tour around the Geothermal Site located at the Te Whakarewarewa Valley in Rotorua, which allows participants to experience up close some of the amazing 500 pools and 65 active geyser vents in the area, including the famous geyser called Pohutu.
- Witness exciting Maori cultural performances, including the entertaining performance art known as kapa haka, conducted daily at Te Puia.
- Explore the sacred Māori site of Te Heketanga-a-Rangi (The Heavenly Origins), which consists of twelve totem posts that extend upwards to the sky, representing the divine beliefs of the Te Arawa culture of Rotorua.
The institute lies at Hemo Road and is accessible by the local bus network. Green-coloured public buses called CityRide typically leave from the Pukuatua Street Bus Terminal and goes through the Institute of Technology or Polytechnic, which is just across the road from Te Puia. However, the bus service and operation hours can be limited. There is a also a circuit bus run by Great Sights New Zealand that takes visitors to major attractions in Rotorua, including Te Puia. Another alternative is to hire a metered taxi or arrange a private shuttle bus for larger groups of visitors.
