New Plymouth General Information
As a host for the pre-eminent World of Music Art and Dance Festival, or simply, WOMAD, New Plymouth has a lot of inherent buzz in New Zealand. The big town on the west coast of the North Island is the undeniable heart of the gorgeous Taranaki Region and home to a considerable populace of 70,000 people. With a vibrant arts and culture scene, dynamic vibe and handsome townscape, New Plymouth is a fashionable “Top City” pick in annual polls in New Zealand.
The inimitable allure of New Plymouth stems from a fabulous backdrop that includes bucolic farmland, Mount Taranaki and lush rainforest. A vast swath of this spectacular scenery unfurls within Egmont National Park, a small 335 km2 reserve that has Mount Taranaki as a dominant linchpin. The active stratovolcano is a brilliant stand-in for Mount Fuji in Japan and indeed, did just that in the 2003 Hollywood epic The Last Samurai. As a model community on the North Island, New Plymouth has a multitude of attractions to enjoy, from Govett-Brewster Art Gallery to the Bowl of Brooklands in wonderful Pukekura Park, Central Districts Stags Cricket to the New Plymouth Observatory.
