Overnight stay

It was generally fine, but one of the bar staff made mistakes on our bill which took a bit of sorting out.

Backpacker's standard

I have stayed at this hotel twice. This time for two days, so I could have a proper look before writing a review. I asked the reception for a silent room and I mentioned that last time my room was a bit dated. I would like to say that the hotel took into account some of my requests and I received a silent room and late checkout (from 10.00 am to 11.00 am). Yes, the standard checkout at the hotel is 10 am. However, the room was dated, which means that quality of all of the rooms at the hotel is low. Reception was good and not good. The duty manager was efficient. However, a receptionist was working slowly and was not really friendly or unfriendly either. The rooms are pretty outdated, with tiny bath tubes (however, it's good that they offer bath tubes - permanent scratched looked disgusting though). TV set in the room iss located that you can watch it from a balcony, but not from a bed. They provide complimentary tea/coffee and a jug. The jug was so discounting - green and dirty. Photo of the jug's hole attached. A fridge in the room looked really dated and corroded. The lift has probably 50 years - it is so slow and so noisy. Why then backpackers standard? They don't provide a duvet - they provide only a white sheet and a blanket, which is typical for low standard hotels and twin rooms at backpackers. Housekeeping did not change the sheets, only tidy up the room, which was a bit disappointing as well. Cost of internet is really disappointing higher than in the 5-star hotels. It's like $12.50 for 2 hours (50 MB) or $25 for 24 hours (500 MB). If you want to do any job related tasks, you will end up with quite a lot to pay for the internet. In general the hotel does the job, but don't expect high quality. For $30 more, you can get a 5-star hotel in Auckland or Gold Coast, so the management should really reconsider they way of working in Dunedin. Especially that this is part of Millennium Hotels. I know that there are not many hotels in Dunedin, but if they want to gain more visitors, they need to offer a bit more - I think that the hotel has a potential, its a matter of paying attention to details and some R&M expenses. I will stay at this hotel probably again in 2 months, to check whether they take seriously customers opinions, but it maybe the last time at this hotel. Next time I will try their restaurant, maybe at least food is valuable (they have a good deal for $12 for Eggs Benedict's and .a hash brown - but I havent tried.)

Perfect inner city location

Warm, comfortable and welcoming, one block away from the Octagon and the shopping of George Street. Easy walking from here to most of the city's major attractions such as Cadbury's, the railway station and the museum. A laundry on the second floor is a real bonus. Dining room fare is tasty without being haute cuisine and the staff are warm and friendly. On site parking is limited but I understand there is other parking available nearby. That would need to be checked out, but I couldn't fault this hotel for a couple of night;s stay.

Returning to University

We had a short stay to bring our son to Dunedin for the start of the university year. The hotel is conveniently located right behind the Octagon, shops & cafes and not far from the University Halls. The hotel is quiet, comfortable and reasonably priced. We've stayed here before and will do so again on visits to Dunedin.

KINGSGATE DUNEDIN.......LACKING

My husband and I stayed here in late September 2013. On our arrival i noticed some short black hairs on the bathroom floor in front of the bath (looked like someones recently cut hair), most of which stayed there until i myself wiped it away. The shower is over the bath (VERY BASIC) and the shower rose is set way up high so if you are not 6ft something you cannot wash yourself properly. Another problem with the shower was that the water pressure is pretty much non existant. In the room itself the only lighting is all these lamps! None on the ceiling itself!! The internet is absolutely hopeless and the staff do not know what to do with it!!! The parking is VERY limited and this is an issue. The Staff allow children to play in the lifts and annoy guests. The good points about this were the location of it and the breakfast was nice. However overall NOT a pleasant stay. Perhaps i expect too much...But i like it to be clean and have lights and parking and internet if they say they have it.
