Linwood is an ethnically diverse inner city suburb, located right on the eastern edge of Christchurch Central City in New Zealand. Once home to wetlands with many rivers and streams, the area was used by the Māori for food gathering and hunting of grey duck, paradise shelduck, flounder, and lamprey eel. Linwood was established in 1850 and was one of Christchurch’s first residential developments. The suburb suffered damage in the 2011 earthquake, but the approved Linwood Village Master Plan aims to rebuild the suburb as a lively urban village, with pedestrian areas, public spaces, street markets, and local businesses.
- Browse the monthly market at the Linwood Community Arts Centre, held on the third Thursday morning of each month, to find interesting souvenirs, or stop by the Centre to see unique art exhibitions by local Christchurch artists.
- Take a walk along the Avon River—east to Christchurch’s Cathedral Square or west to the estuary—and see lovely gardens, plant and animal life, and many punters.
- Check out a local rugby match in the many parks that dot the community, such as Linwood Park and Bromley Park.
From the Christchurch International Airport, visitors can get to Linwood by shuttle, taxi, or rental car. The journey is approximately 14 kilometres and takes roughly half an hour along either Memorial Avenue, Wairakei Road, or Harewood Road. Shuttles can be found at the Regional Transport Hub in the northern end of the International Arrivals Hall. The grid pattern of Linwood makes the community easy to explore, and it is about a five-minute drive from the centre of Christchurch. The community is also a short drive to the beach.
