Waitemata Harbour hotels
Sometimes referred to as Auckland Harbour, Waitemata Harbour is one of New Zealand's busiest locations. It connects the beautiful Auckland waterfront and main port with the Hauraki Gulf and Pacific Ocean. The Harbour Bridge is always teeming with activity, and beneath it seems to be an endless procession of watercraft, from the smallest yacht to the gigantic cruise liners. No surprise then that some of the world’s best sailing competitions are held here. Just across the way from Waitemata Harbour is the volcanic Rangitoto Island, a sanctuary for the local wildlife, and the historic seaside village of Devonport.
- Go on a cruise on a sailboat, ferry, or yacht around Waitemata Harbour to take in the views of the islands, Auckland Harbour Bridge, Bean Rock Lighthouse, and other passing boats.
- Take a ferry from the Ferry Terminal off of the harbour for pleasant day excursions to the neighbouring islands, such as Rangitoto, Great Barrier Island, and Waiheke, to explore more of the Auckland area.
- Learn about New Zealand’s maritime history at the National Maritime Museum and its various historical and nautical artefacts and old sailing vessels.
Auckland Airport offers an easy transfer into the city centre on the bright-blue Airbus Express, and once in the city, getting around is equally straightforward with the bright-red City Link buses running throughout the day. Wynyard Quarter on Auckland’s waterfront is a good place to catch a bus that will take passengers all through the CBD, along the main Queen Street, and to the Waitemata Harbour. Ferry services are one of the easiest ways to explore the harbour and the surrounding islands and destinations. Driving across the Auckland Harbour Bridge also offers a great perspective of the glittering harbour.
