Ponsonby is a hip inner-city suburb of Auckland, New Zealand that is situated just a few kilometres from the central business district of the city. The district has a rich history that began in the 19th century when it was a haven for rich city residents desiring great views of the harbour. The 1950’s saw a downturn in Ponsonby’s fortunes and the area became full of slums that were later inhabited by Auckland’s artist and LBGT community in the 1970’s. Now Ponsonby has undergone a rebirth and is known for its chic restaurants, upmarket shops, nightclubs and trendy boutiques.
- Take one of Ponsonby’s historical walking tours that include the Freeman’s Bay Walk through the historic back streets, where you will gain insight into the suburb’s rise from slums to one of the best areas of Auckland.
- Admire the Gothic style of the St Johns Church, a 19th century wooden structure that includes intricate carved detailing done by Anton Teutonberg.
- See where the outdoor café culture of Auckland got its start at the One 2 One Café, a mainstay of Ponsonby where local artists can be found sipping strong espressos.
One of the best ways to get around Auckland is by the LINK bus system that has colour-coded routes that snake throughout the city. Train service in this city is limited so many residents prefer to get to Ponsonby using taxis or private cars. City planners have encouraged cycling by constructing a dense network of bicycle paths that go through the city. Ponsonby can be explored on foot, as most of the shops, bars, and cafes are centrally located on The Strip so it is a perfect area to spend an afternoon of shopping and eating.
