Arnhem General Information
Cosmopolitan, urbane Arnhem presents the best of the Netherlands in a tidy, superb package that includes fine cultural landmarks, museums and festivals. The city of 150,000 people is a fairly manageable destination to explore over a few days, perhaps en route to Utrecht, Eindhoven, Rotterdam or indeed, Antwerp, Belgium or Münster, Germany.
Under the surface, Arnhem hides a remarkable history that dates back to the 9th century, though in truth, archaeological work in the city infers human activity some seventy millennia before. A fine ensemble of Arnhem points of interest promote what the city and indeed, Gelderland province of the Netherlands, is all about. Hoge Veluwe National Park should be your first stop in Arnhem, as the picturesque 55 km2 preserve unfurls some of the best landmarks in the city. These include the excellent Kröller-Müller Museum, with inherent works by the likes of Picasso, Van Gogh, Mondrian and Braque. The Burgers’ Zoo is one of the most vital in Europe and re-creates eight distinct theme environments, from a tropical rainforest to a mangrove swamp. Other staple attractions in Arnhem include the St. Eusebius Groote Kerk and Korenmarkt. The city also lays claim to a superb culinary and nightlife scene.
