Originally intended to be one of Amsterdam’s most vibrant food markets, Nieuwmarkt has far exceeded even those lofty expectations over the years. While this world-renowned food center is still the place to go for all things organic, today it’s also one of the hippest spots in Amsterdam for local eateries, cafes, and coffee shops. To the north in this district lies Chinatown, which features a variety of Chinese, Malaysian, and Thai cuisines. In the market’s square holidaymakers can spend the afternoon perusing the authentic shops and participating first-hand in an important social commons amidst this vibrant city. Weekends, in particular, are when Nieuwmarkt offers its best choices in both restaurant dining and organic market selections.
- Visit De Waag where the famous Rembrandt painted The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp and enjoy some of the starkest coffee in the city.
- Enjoy a cocktail at the Cafe Cuba for a little Latin flavour amongst the hustle-bustle of Nieuwmarkt.
- Shop for authentic and indelible treasures at the Nieuwmarkt antiques market every Saturday.
A metro station is conveniently located directly in the centre of Nieuwmarkt. In fact, Nieuwmarkt itself is located in the heart of Amsterdam and is easily accessible from anywhere in the sprawling city. The Touristbus, a colourfully painted American-style school bus, runs everyday throughout Amsterdam and offers travellers a two-hour tour as well as transit to the market. Trams running until midnight are also widely available throughout the city. Finally, canal boats are also available and fares often include discounts to several of the city’s most fascinating museums.
