Ouarzazate General Information
Contemporary visitors to Morocco who venture beyond the Atlantic coast and usual suspects of Fes, Meknes, Marrakech, Rabat, Essaouira and Casablanca redeem big rewards. The country is incredibly diverse, from the High Atlas Mountains to the Sahara, Roman ruins to grand imperial landmarks. Those who can tear themselves away from the busy medinas and breezy Corniche promenades would do well to consider Ouarzazate on their Morocco adventures.
Some 200 km southeast of Marrakech, the capital of Ouarzazate Province in Souss-Massa-Draâ, a vibrant region of the Kingdom, is home to 60,000 people and sits on the doorstep of the vast desert. Most people have seen Ouarzazate countless times in Hollywood epics, from The Last Temptation of Christ to Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator to Kingdom of Heaven. Indeed, as a perpetual fave with film scouts, the small city has a lot of inherent charm. The primary target for the cameras however, is not modern Ouarzazate per se, but the ancient Berber settlement, or ksar, of Ait-Ben-Haddou. A brilliant UNESCO World Heritage Site, the village is a venerable step back in time and without peer in Morocco.
