Excellent location for a family holiday in Marrakech

Our family thoroughly enjoyed our experience at the Kenzi Farah, finding the Staff caring, friendly and helpful. If you are wise enough to book a stay at this hotel, you will find you have bagged a bargain within walking distance of the Medina and Souks, but in the up and coming Hivernage/Minara area of the city. The hotel is within a short taxi ride of the hotel. I do not know the cost of a taxi from the airport to the hotel, but it is 100 MAD from the hotel to the airport. Important, make sure that you agree the cost of any service in Marrakech, especially taxis, before the service commences, otherwise you will pay over the top. Initially, you may disagree with me that the area is up and coming when you see the poor state of the pavements around the hotel, but once you have compared Hivernage, in particular the Minara Mall, with the city centre, there is no contest. Marrakech is a city in progress, but it is not Dubai... yet. In this vein, it is important is dispel any notion that The Kenzi Farah is a bona fide 5* hotel. It is not in the same class as top end hotels in more developed locations. The breakfast is an excellent buffet type, although the coffee is served by waiters. Do try to get up early enough to avoid the rush of late risers, but provided you are down by 08.30, you should have no problems securing a table and enjoying attentive service from their friendly waiters. The decor is looking slightly tired in places and the plumbing is too, but provided you look at the price you pay and relate that to what you would get in the EU for the same money, you should be delighted with your choice. Please remember though to factor in the tourist tax that hotels in Marrakech are obliged to charge guests, as in approaches £100 per week. The pool is excellent and the images we viewed before booking match the reality. I was worried that the pool might be too small and crowded for such a large hotel, but in actual fact it was fine and certainly less crowded than most public swimming pools in the UK. [If considering a day trip from the hotel, I would recommend Ourika Valley, although the walk to the waterfalls is only suitable for the able-bodied older children and adults. If you are more adventurous, Jebel Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa, is nearby and an organised two-day trek for two people to climb it only costs around €300/3,000MAD. It requires no climbing or trekking experience, but remember to select the right travel insurance, as most policies will only cover hill-walking up to 2,000 or 2,500 metres.]

Good Value, but not Five Star

Overall we enjoyed our stay. Rooms are spacious. However, the hotel needs some attention. We had to chase towels and keys since they didn't work on some nights. The reception staff is mixed, English isn't spoken much. The breakfast is good and the staff in the breakfast room friendly. The grounds of the hotel are wonderful, so is the pool. The famous Medina is only a short walk away. The hotel is four star only.

Friendly and helpful staff, though

Friendly and helpful staff, though a little french will help you more. Information limited at check in, but reception staff happy to answer any queries and all general hotel facilities are available. Great pool and gardens, food is relatively expensive compared to central Marrakech. Air-con a must in summer at 40C, so this was welcome. Towels for the loungers or pool are provided poolside for guests. Not a 5 star, but not a 3 star either...somewhere in-between! Medina is only a 30 minute stroll, safe night or day. Word of warning - set taxi price before setting off if you prefer to travel this way or you will be stung! Explore beyond the tourist souks in the medina and you will have a better experience - you will get lost, but that is part of the fun, and the sight of the main minaret will always guide you back to the main square, which is a busy spectacle at night. Moroccans are friendly and they accept a polite 'non merci'.
