Morelia is the capital of the Mexican state of Michoacán, about 110 km south of Salamanca. Its consistent colonial-style makes it one of the most beautiful cities in the country. The United Nations declared it a World Heritage Site due to the well-preserved historical buildings here, such as the Cathedral of Michoacán.
- Aqueduct of Morelia
- Nexpa Beach
- Tarascas Fountain
- Take in some history at the Museum of Michoacán
- Watch a football game played by Chivas Morelia
- Participate in the Day of the Dead celebrations around the city’s baroque cathedral
The climate in Morelia is warm and dry; the highest average temperatures occur in spring and reach nearly 30ºC. The summer averages are significantly lower because much of the annual 800 mm of precipitation falls during these months. The low temperatures in winter do not reach the freezing point, and the days are pleasant and usually dry.
Getting There & Around
The Morelia International Airport is a modern facility which receives daily flights from Los Angeles, Houston and Chicago. Buses from all parts of the country reach this town. From Guadalajara, a bus can get you to Morelia in less than four hours.
As in most of Mexico, buses and taxis are the primary form of public transportation. There is also a special form of transport known as the combi. These are mini-vans that transport people to specific locations like a taxi.
