The Merida Rundown
Merida is one of Mexico’s best-kept secrets. Located in the Yucatan Peninsula just 35 km (21.7 miles) from the Gulf of Mexico, this centuries-old Mayan city is steeped in colonial history. Indeed, Merida is known as the second largest historic centre outside of Mexico City. The downtown Centro Historico is a popular area for its classical colonial buildings. There are examples of both Yucatec Maya architecture and Italian- and French-influenced architecture in Merida. America Park is a beautiful place to stroll through
In Merida you will find some of the area’s best museums, including the Regional Anthropology Museum that houses many original stone carving from Mayan sights nearby. El Paseo Montejo is a lovely street lined with trees and houses from the days of yore, a great place for an evening walk. And for those looking for a place to take a relaxing stroll, located just outside the city walls you will find the beautiful garden La Ermita de Santa Isabel.
When To Go
Merida is a warm, tropical and misty city, with both a wet and a dry climate. With the hot and humid climate Merida has, the humidity level varies from moderate to high according to the time of year. Humidity is around 72 per cent because of the wind and sea breeze. Many times Merida is a few degrees hotter than other coastal areas because of its low elevation and inland location.
One thing that characterizes Merida is the brightness of the night sky, offering visitors a sight they will long remember.
- Average annual high temperatures: Ranging from 28°C (82°F) in January to 36°C (97°F) in May.
- Low temperatures: Ranging from 18°C (64°F) in January to 23°C (73°F) in May and June.
- Dry season: January through April
- Rainy season: June and September
There are direct flights into Merida’s Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport arriving from Mexico City, Miami, Houston, Las Vegas and Europe. Another route is flying into Cancun and then renting a car or hiring a taxi to make the three-hour drive heading west on the highway.
- If staying in or visiting the centre part of town, many restaurants and attractions are in walking distance if you don't mind the tropical climate.
- There are also many taxis and buses which you can get for a reasonable price.
- Another option is renting a simple car from Mexico Rent a Car for about $35 USD a day.
With a peerless collection of Roman ruins that date back more than two thousand years, the capital of the autonomous community of Extremadura is a veritable city. As such, Mérida joins dozens of other superb destinations in Spain that often linger in the long shadows cast by Barcelona, Madrid and resorts on the Costa Brava and Costa del Sol.
Mérida has a very distinct cultural vibe for visitors not altogether familiar with Extremadura. The small city of under 60,000 people is a notable haven for artists and musicians and has a lively nightlife, made all the more enjoyable because of Mérida's exceptional architecture. From ancient landmarks like the Roman Bridge, Arch of Trajan and Circus Maximus to the modern State Library and Sports City, Mérida is a great place to explore. The former Roman provincial capital offers countless reasons to leave the coast and seek out Spain's many interior gems.
