8 Days of Fun and Sun

Went at end of October and this was my first visit to Mexico. Nice facility that is well maintained. Front desk and concierges were fluent in English. Most of the staff speaks English very well but we each practiced what Spanish we knew and picked up some more. This is NOT for the traveler who wants to walk everywhere to shop everyday, hit the nightclubs or visit American restaurants or is looking for a lot of resort based activities. This resort is about 10 miles from the Hotel Zone and is not overflowing with expensive activities or immediate access to same. It is for the traveler who is interested in just relaxing and taking advantage of opportunities to get out into the community or go on tours. There is a travel agency on site that can book a variety of local tours for you. If you aren't planning on eating 'off campus' consider the All Inclusive option. My group did the European Plan and did quite well. We learned how to use the collectivo, the local buses and the Punta Sam ferry which is right next door. We got around quite a bit and really enjoyed visiting central Cancun, Isla Mujeres, and Chichen Itza. Two of our party went into Cancun 3 evenings in a row and partied at 1111 and a street festival. They had a great time. Ate at various local cantinas, one of which (Isla Mujeres) was patrolled by very large iguanas. Bartender called them "the police". Food and drinks at the cantinas was often better than at Zama on the resort grounds. Went to Mercado 28 and bought incredibly cheap vanilla at the official souvenir store. The shop keepers are very agressive but you can find some very good bargains in leather and jewelry. On our last night ate at La Casona on the grounds. Excellent food and wine. Davinos was also praised for their dinners by those who went. Burger Bites was a disappointment. You could do better at McDonalds or Pizza Hut. Breakfast buffet was quite extensive and included made to order omelets. Try the 'green juice'. It was great. Did the resort's time share presentation that went most of the day due to long discussion with a couple members of the group I was with. Will not be doing that again. A bit noisy when you were on the balcony due to the design of the building, sound bounces up and around but inside the rooms it is nice and quiet. I liked the hammock and slept in it for a portion of each night. Very comfortable. Got bug bites as a result but nothing serious or annoying aside from the little red welts. You sleep outside you take your chances. Got a massage at Spa Village and enjoyed it very much. A nice setup inside the grounds and you barely know that you are in a resort. What DID NOT WORK so well: - ATM died and it was 2 days before a service request was made. The hotel will exchange money, but they aren't necessarily swimming in pesos. Those of us needing cash rode the collectivo to the ADO bus station in town and hit up the ATMs there before heading off to Mercado 28. - WiFi was $10 a day/room however service was not good. Many times the login failed to work or you got a message that too many devices were attached. Definitely overpriced for such poor service. The hotel has a terminal at the front desk and in the hospitality suite. Use those if you aren't planning on doing anything other than occasional checks on email. You can print your return boarding pass at the front desk terminal. The staff will retrieve it for you from the printer. Would go back because it is not party central, has good access to the community if I want it, has good value for what you get and staff are all very nice.

Money-saving tip: Not Applicable

Take a chance and ride the collectivo to the ADO station in town. Only 6 pesos. Then catch an R1 to La Isla mall in the Hotel Zone, only 8.5 pesos. Shopping, restaurants and access to some interesting activities next to the lagoon. Cheap ride, found good food.
