Little India hotels
Perhaps, no place outside India is as authentically and colourfully Indian as Little India, the small enclave located along Market Street, Chulia Street, and Queen Street in George TownPenang, Malaysia. This rectangular-shaped enclave was created to accommodate thousands of Indian migrant workers during the early twentieth century, and is one of the city’s most popular attractions today. Here you will find everything, from astrologers, barbers, and fortune-tellers, to aromatic spices, exquisite silk saris, and mouth-watering Indian cuisine. Add colourful festivals and elaborately decorated Hindu temples, and you will discover just why Little India attracts millions of visitors every year.
- See the amazing sculptures of Hindu Gods and Goddesses above the entrance and across the façade of the 1833 Penang Mahamariamman Temple, or the gold, silver, emerald and diamond-embellished statue of Lord Subramaniam inside.
- Savour aromatic and delicious South Indian culinary delights, including the popular roti chanai and thosai, or a spicy vegetarian meal served on a banana leaf at the Sri AnandaBhawan restaurant in Penang’s Little India.
- Shop for ethnic Indian gold jewellery, trinkets, silk and cotton clothing, and even a VCD of the latest Bollywood hits, all available at Market Street, Little India.
Little India, a short walk from the centre of George Town, is accessible via Penang’s Bayan Lepas International Airport in about 45-minutes by taxi, bus or hired car.
