Kek Lok Si Temple

The ornate pagoda atop Kek Lok Si Temple is one of the central features of the island of Penang, Malaysia. This temple, whose name means “Temple of Supreme Bliss”, represents the harmony found between the Mahayana and Chinese Buddhism that are both prevalent in Malaysia. Kek Lok Si Temple was constructed in the late 19th century and subsequent renovations and additions have made it the largest Buddhist temple in Southeast Asia. The temple is the hub of Chinese Buddhism in Penang and generous donations from this community have allowed the interior to be even more ornately decorated.

  • Climb the steep staircase as you approach Kek Lok Si Temple to find a bevy of interesting souvenir stands, as well as the Liberation Pond, where you can release a turtle to make merit.
  • Take the lift to the upper platform atop the hill where you can check out the massive statue of Kuan Yin, Goddess of Mercy and get amazing views of Penang below.
  • Enter the main prayer hall where you will find brightly painted, intricate woodwork as well as statues of Buddha and various bodhisattvas revered by Penang Buddhists.

Kek Lok Si Temple is situated in the Air Itam region of Penang, not far from the city centre. The easiest and cheapest way to get there is by the Rapid Penang Bus System that has several routes that will take you directly to the base of the temple. There is a lot to explore on the grounds of Kek Lok Si Temple, so walking will give you the best chance to absorb the atmosphere as well as the spectacular views. You can also hire motorized rickshaws or taxis from the city centre.
