Gurney Drive hotels
Gurney Drive is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Penang, Malaysia for good reason. This seaside promenade is famous for the delicious hawker food stalls that line the sidewalk and the lively restaurants that come to life after the sun goes down. The area was named for Sir Henry Gurney, a British officer who was assassinated during the Malaysian Emergency. Even though the once famous Gurney Drive beaches have receded, the area is still a bustling night-time attraction where visitors can enjoy candlelight dinners with a tranquil ocean backdrop.
- Visit Wat Chaiya Mangkalaram Temple on Gurney Drive to see the largest Thai temple in Penang and the 108-foot-long reclining Buddha, a sprawling, gold-leafed statue said to be the third largest in the world.
- See the large stone elephants and beautifully manicured Pagoda grounds of the Dharmikarama Burmese Temple of Penang, where beautiful murals and Buddha images bring devotees from all over Malaysia.
- Enjoy fine dining at Bali Hai Restaurant on Gurney Drive to experience an array of huge mantis prawns, Australian lobsters and other sea creatures that are kept in aquariums around the restaurant.
The Penang Bayan Lepas International Airport services the area and is only about thirty minutes from Gurney Drive. The Penang Bridge connects the city to the mainland and is itself an attraction, as it is one of the longest bridges in Asia. The ambiance and flavours of Gurney Drive are best absorbed on foot, but walkers should dress lightly, as the oppressive heat can quickly ruin your day. Human-powered trishaws are also a popular way to tour the area, and most drivers can be hired for sightseeing trips at a cheap cost.
