Fort Cornwallis hotels
Fort Cornwallis lies on the coast of Penang, Malaysia. This is the largest standing fort in the entire country, and was named after Charles Cornwallis, the late Governor General of Bengal. Fort Cornwallis is a unique, star-shaped fort that has never witnessed any wartime action. Originally intended to protect the city from pirates and the Sultan of Kedah, the fort eventually served administrative functions. Today, the fort stands as an Ancient Monument and Historic Site, making it a popular tourist destination for a peek into Malaysia’s colonial past.
- Several old cannons adorn the walls of Fort Cornwallis, the largest being Seri Rambai Cannon, which was originally gifted to the Sultan of Johore by the Dutch, before the British seized the artefact and placed it in the fort.
- With a huge roof and buttressed structure typical of the magazines of the colonial era, the gunpowder magazine is the oldest surviving colonial roofed structure in Penang.
- Local Penang guides in period costumes provide tours of Fort Cornwallis to view the large bronze statue of Captain Light whilst the 1812 Overture plays in the background.
Fort Cornwallis is located in Padang Kota Lama in Georgetown, Penang. It lies on the northeastern coast, and can be reached most conveniently by a taxi or car. Bus services from Kuala Lampur to Penang are available, with numbers 4, 7, 10 and several others stopping by the fort. There is ample parking at Fort Cornwallis, however, many tourists enjoy exploring the fort on a traditional trishaw ride. Arriving by trishaw offers not only a novel experience, but is also a great way to take in the sights along the route. The fort is within walking distance from the Esplanade.
