Pantai Pasir Hitam
The Pantai Pasir Hitam in Langkawi, or Black Sand Beach, is a world-renowned holidaymaker destination. Interestingly, the water cannot be swum due to large rocks in the shallows; however, visitors to this inimitable location are famously more attracted to the sand. Though the black granules are a result of the beach’s unique mineral content, local legend states the colour comes from a resentful mermaid who was slighted by a fisherman, or the dark aftermath of horrible battles that once occurred here. The beach is lined with duty free shops selling food, clothing, and one-of-a-kind local items, including artefacts made of the unique black sand.
- Purchase a Langkawi coconut from one of the food stalls along the beach whilst enjoying the sprawling sands, all before relaxing on Pantai Pasir Hitam.
- Stop by the neighbouring Kompliks Budaya Kraf to see local artisans’ handiwork and learn how to make crafts such as native pottery.
- Sign up for the Langkawi Skybridge Tour, a 4-hour trip that provides amazing photo opportunities of Malaysian sites like the Crocodile Farm, Seven Wells Waterfall, and Pantai Pasir Hitam.
Taxis and local buses are available to take visitors all over Langkawi, though many people find it opportune to drive themselves to their destinations. Rent a car, motorbike, or bicycle from one of the rental facilities near the Kuah Jetty or the airport. Pantai Pasir Hitam is located in northern Langkawi, which is situated about 30 minutes away by car from the Langkawi International Airport. You can take a ferry from Kuala Kedah, Kuala Perlis, or Penang to access Langkawi. Those on motorbikes are required by law to wear helmets.
