National Monument hotels
Standing 132 metres tall in Jakarta’s Merdeka Square against a backdrop of skyscrapers, the iconic National Monument honours Indonesia's independence. The monument consists of a suggestive 117-metre high obelisk rising from a “cup” platform, representing the Indonesian male and female symbols lingga and yoni. The white Italian marble monument is topped with a 14.5-ton gold foil Flame of Independence. Commonly known as Monas, the National Monument was opened to the public on 12 July 1975, surrounded by a lovely green public park.
- Head up to the observation platform at the top of the National Monument to look out over the city of Jakarta from 115 metres high.
- Learn about the history and culture of Indonesia and Jakarta at the Museum Sejarah Nasional (National History Museum) located in the bottom of the monument.
- Explore the marble Hall of Independence in the cup area of the monument to see the key symbols of Indonesian independence and a nice view.
The National Monument (Monas) is located in central Jakarta, and it is open daily to the public except for the last Monday of the month. It is easy to find in the city, as the landmark tower rises above the skyline. By bus, the Trans Jakarta Busway’s Blok M to Kota Tua route stops at Monas Busway Terminal, and visitors taking the train can get off at the Gambir Station. Taxis are also a convenient way to get to the monument area. Once at the monument, take time to explore the surrounding gardens, pool, and reliefs showing scenes from Indonesian history. The best time to climb the monument is early in the day when it opens at 8 am before the crowds.
