Kuala Lumpur Chinatown hotels
Central to Kuala Lumpur is Petaling Street, the centre of Chinatown. It comes alive in late afternoon, when cooler air and bright lights combine to draw tourists and locals alike to the covered open-air markets and the Chinese heritage of the British colonial era. Chinatown is a popular tourist area, possibly the most popular in Malaysia: a bargain-hunter’s paradise, where you can find everything from counterfeit designer brands to Chinese herbs and tasty street food. Be prepared to haggle, though. Don’t be afraid to make an opening offer of as low as 40% of the stated price.
- Haggle on Chinatown’s main market on Petaling Street – but be careful of pickpockets, and be aware that if a price on a brand name is too good to be true, it’s probably counterfeit.
- Buy a book in the beautiful Lee Rubber Building – the historic Kuala Lumpur Art Deco building where the Japanese surrendered to the British Administration in 1945.
- Visit the Hindu temple built by Tamil workers at the edge of Chinatown – surrounded by two Buddhist temples, it seems incongruous, but incorporates Spanish and Italian tiles, precious stones and gold.
Driving is the main mode of commuting in Kuala Lumpur, creating massive traffic jams and difficulties. You can arrive in the city from one of two airports, and the city is well connected by highways. Chinatown as well as the centre of Kuala Lumpur is small enough to walk, and though there is little parking, there are many hostels and hotels available within the area. Your best bet during high-traffic hours is to combine transportation methods; use the monorail system to avoid traffic for most of the journey and then take a taxi to your final destination.
