Brickfields is a neighbourhood in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia that is known as the “Little India” of the city due to its large population of Indian citizens. The community started as a colonial settlement, when the British brought in workers from Sri Lanka and India to work on the railway. Many of these workers remained and the area quickly evolved into the centre for Indian culture in this city. In addition to the large number of Indian owned shops and restaurants Brickfields is known for its high concentration of religious structures that have earned it the status of “Divine Location.”
- Admire the rich and unique Tamil architecture of the Sri Kandaswamy Temple, a structure that is more than 100 years old and is one of the most prominent Sri Lankan temples in Kuala Lumpur.
- See performances of traditional Indian dance and song at the Temple of Fine Arts in Brickfields, one of the best places in Kuala Lumpur to admire Indian dance, music and arts.
- Eat your fill at the delicious banana leaf meal shops that are found throughout Brickfields, a South Indian treat that ranks among the most popular foods in the city.
Recently the Kuala Lumpur Central transport hub was opened in Brickfields, so the area has become a central stop for intercity and commuter trains. There is also a KL Central monorail station directly across the street, so getting to Brickfields is easy from just about anywhere in Kuala Lumpur. There are also several bus routes that snake through the neighbourhood and stop at the Kota Raya or Klang bus stations that are centrally located in the neighbourhood. Little India features a dense ecosystem of shops and stalls so it is best to explore on foot to enjoy the sights and smells.
