Shinjuku Station

Shinjuku train station located in central Tokyo is the world’s busiest transport hub, used by an average of three and a half million people per year. While the sheer number of people in the station might prove a bit overwhelming to a first-time visitor, the station is clean, efficient, and quite safe. It is also a major hub for travel to many other parts of Tokyo and Japan. The station includes 200 exits and 25 platforms, as well as several huge underground malls. Almost a city unto itself, Shinjuku Station also offers storage lockers, restaurants, and bars.

  • Check out the shopping scene at Shinjuku station where you can find high fashion at the Lumine Est department store at the station’s east exit.
  • Try out one of the many food stalls within Shinjuku Station or take a three-minute walk northeast of the station to the upscale Tora-fugu Tei restaurant which serves blowfish.
  • Watch a movie at Shinjuku Picadilly, the station’s newest movie theatre, located north of the Tokyo Metro Underground walkway—the theatre features private and semi-private rooms.

Shijuku Station primarily connects central Tokyo with the city’s western suburbs. A dozen railway and subway lines travel to and from the station. Shinjuku Station can be reached from Tokyo Station by the JR Chuo Line, which should take about fifteen minutes. From Ueno station, take the JR Yamanote Line to reach Shinjuku Station. This trip will take about twenty-five minutes. Shinjuku Station can also be reached by long distance highway bus and by many of Tokyo’s city buses. Travellers looking for a quick way between Narita Airport and Shinjuku Station can find shuttle services at the airport.
