Akihabara, or Electric Town in Tokyo, is the Japanese hotspot for wireless, electronic-based cafés, and shopping for electronics. Visit the maze of passages in Soto Kanda 1-chōme or a specialty shop like LaOx. Travel a little further from the station to find more variety and lower prices.
- Visit the Tokyo Animation Centre. Get all the newest information about animation and video games, and even experience a modern recording studio!
- Stop at the newest Tokyo craze, an Akihabara "maid café," where pretty waitresses dress like French maids, serve you drinks, and dote on you, but be aware that many don't speak English.
- Go on a weekend when the Akihabara streets are closed to vehicles and the cosplayers are out in force.
Tokyo is extremely pedestrian-friendly, with a lot of public transportation options. Really, you not only don't need a car to get to Akihabara, but it could be detrimental to your schedule! Instead, take the train into Akihabara Station on the JR Yamanote line or the Hibiya Subway line, among others. On the north end of the district, you can take the train into the Suehirocho Station off of the Ginza subway line. Make sure you're wearing comfortable shoes, as it is best to explore this area on foot. Directories on buildings tell you where the adult content is as well as what's available.
