The Pontocho district of Kyoto is made famous by its abundance of dining outlets which offer delightful varieties of Japanese cuisine for visitors. One may also choose to frequent the traditional settings of its tea and geisha houses, fondly referred to as chaya by the locals. The fascinating art of tea ceremonies, geisha performances, and the gentle sound of the shamisen has long been embedded in Pontocho, dating back as far as the sixteenth century. Tourists who visit are no doubt looking for a feel of the old Japanese underground, as well as some authentic living history and food.
- View the Statue of Izumo no Okuni, believed to be the founder of the kabuki theatre, located in Pontocho nearby the Kamo River.
- Visit the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo Theatre, located on the streets of Sanjo-dori; it operates as the practice hall for beautiful and traditional geisha performers in Kyoto.
- Experience the Kamo River Dance held annually in Pontocho, a highlight being the performances by the geisha and maiko to usher the spring and cherry blossom season in Kyoto.
Kyoto does not have airports in its vicinity; it is instead served by two main airports in Osaka, the large city to the southwest. Pontocho can be reached by train at two stations, the Kawaramachi Station, which would require one to travel using the Hankyu line, as well as the Shijo Station, which is linked to the Keihan line. The other alternative to Pontocho would be to take a bus from Kyoto Station, specifically the 17 and 205, and get off at the Shijo Kawaramachi bus stop. Travelling by car can be costly as parking is expensive.
