St Marks Square
St Marks Square, known as the Piazza San Marco locally, is one of Venice’s largest attractions for residents and visitors alike. Dating back to the ninth century A.D., the square began as a small gathering place and was expanded several times over its history to the expansive city plaza that it is today. Best known for housing St Marks Basilica, St Marks Square is also home to several other historically important buildings, including the Procuratie Vecchie, which served as a residence for procurators, and the Doge’s Palace, which was the royal home of Venetian rulers for centuries.
- Tour St Marks Basilica, the distinctively ornate church that dominates the western end of St Marks Square and has been nicknamed the “Church of Gold.”
- Climb the Campanile, an enormous bell tower that stands high over the square and the entire city of Venice, to get a birds-eye view of St Marks Square in its entirety.
- Have a meal at one of the Venice cafes such as Gran Caffè Quadri and Caffè Lavena, which sit on the corner of the square and feature nightly music for patrons.
Travellers who are flying into Venice might arrive at either Marco Polo Airport or Treviso Airport, depending on their specific carriers. Both airports offer transport to the city centre on bus systems. To reach St Marks Square, though, guests have a variety of options. They can take a motorboat or a water taxi to the piazza in about an hour from Marco Polo Airport. The city’s Vaporetto system, which uses water boats to get around, also provides service to St Marks Square from several parts of the area on routes 1, 52, and 82.
