Santa Croce - San Polo hotels
Santa Croce is one of the six subdivisions of Venice, Italy and connects the city to the mainland. Santa Croce has two distinct areas. The first being built in the medieval period and the western portion that includes the artificial island Tronchetto, as well as the main port. Santa Croce is known as one of the secret areas of Venice and visitors will find an array of restaurants and hidden lanes that are not crowded with tourists. In addition to the medieval architecture that flanks the canals, Santa Croce features a number of museums, art galleries and churches.
- Admire the austere decorations and white Istrian stone of the Tolentini Church, a nineteenth century church that is a great representation of the Neo-Classical style found throughout Venice.
- See contemporary art from around Italy and other countries at the Modern Art Museum located in Santa Croce, one of the largest collections of artwork in all of Venice.
- Walk through the ornate archways of the Fondaco dei Turchi, a palace that was built in the thirteenth century and still contains many interesting ruins and medieval sculptures from that period.
The Marco Polo International Airport is the main gateway to Venice and it is easy to get to Santa Croce from the airport. You can take ferries and buses that go along the canals to get to the centre of Venice. Once in Venice, there are a number of ways to get to Santa Croce. Most people get around by vaporettos and inexpensive boats that offer transport through the network of canals that snake through Venice to Santa Croce. Since much of the area is shut down to traffic, Santa Croce is great to explore on foot.
