San Giorgio Maggiore
Viewed from across San Marco Square, via the canal, the island of San Giorgio Maggiore is a wonder to behold. Located four minutes away by boat from St Mark’s pier in Venice, the island’s church, similarly named and its campanile, welcomes tourists with an amazing example of Italian renaissance architecture. Getting to the observation deck of the Bell Tower leads one to terrific views of St. Mark’s Church and Doge’s Palace. San Giorgio Maggiore hosts an ancient library, an aged Benedictine monastery, and should be on every visitor’s list of things to see in the area.
- Visit San Giorgio Maggiore church, designed by Andrea Palladio and check out the choir stalls, the altar, and then later on climb the campanile to see amazing views of Venice, and the nearby island of Guidecca.
- Check out the Grand Canal in Venice, which forms an important water corridor in the city; this is the best place to try out the gondola, vaporetti, and other water-based transportation.
- Tour the Giorgio Cini Monument Foundation in San Giorgio Maggiore, and learn about the history of the island, and origins of the various monuments found there.
Venice is a city that uses waterways as a transport means, although other transport modes are also used. If you use trains, you will use either the Santa Lucia or Mestre station and then switch to a waterborne means of getting to the island. Buses, too use the same station, and are very affordable. However, the best way to get to San Giorgio Maggiore is by ferry, waterbus, or vaporetti. These are quick water-boats that have stops all over the city, and are affordable. Nonetheless, once on the island, walking is the best way to see the sights.
